MAJI is a music and cultural platform founded by DJ and event producer Eleanor Nelima, also known as MSBHVR.The project began with an interest in the relationship between contemporary electronic music and the musical traditions that exist around us. Kenya has a vast musical history, yet much of it remains separated from the contemporary club and electronic music spaces where a new generation of artists is developing their practice.MAJI is interested in that space between the two.Its aim is to create opportunities for Kenyan artists to look more closely at the music that has shaped them, to experiment with it, and to develop contemporary forms from within their own cultural context.This means taking Kenyan musical traditions seriously as music, rather than treating them solely as heritage. Mugithi, Ohangla, Taarab, Mwanzele and other local forms carry their own histories, structures, instruments, voices and ways of bringing people together. They do not need to be placed outside contemporary music in order to be preserved.MAJI asks what happens when these sounds are brought into the present and given space within electronic music.
